From 1 to 11 December, we invite everyone to bring their used books to the faculty – let us bring those books back to life by donating them to the Lithuanian communities located outside the Lithuanian boarders.
The roots of “Christmas of Books” charity campaign at VU in Kaunas
A few years ago, students of Cultural Management, led by the professor Virginija Jurėnienė organized the first such Christmas campaign, during which the books were donated to the Lithuanians living in Belarus. The campaign developed close ties between the faculty and the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Belarus, as well as the ambassador himself Evaldas Ignatavičius.
The success of the first campaign encouraged the faculty’s community to continue this meaningful activity and share their books with the libraries of Lithuanian communities located outside Lithuania. The books donated by the faculty’s students and personnel have already found their new home on the outskirts of the country or outside the boarders of Lithuania. (e.g. Pelesa Lithuanian Public Association “Gimtinė“, Minsk Lithuanian Association “Vytis”).
Last year’s event “Sharing Books with the Lithuanians in Belarus” was included in the LR President Dalia Grybauskaitė’s charity campaign “Christmas of Books”. The organizers of the faculty’s event were invited to the President’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where they brought the books and were honoured for this meaningful and fruitful event which took place at Vilnius University in Kaunas.
Let us continue this meaningful tradition!
According to the advisor to the minister of LR Embassy in Belarus Irena Ūsaitė, this year the books will be distributed to the Lithuanians, especially children, who live in Belarus, Kaliningrad (Russia), Seiniai (Poland) and on the Latvian border but desire to read in their mother-tongue language. The faculty received an invitation from the President’s Office to take part in the campaign, since “last year’s campaign was very successful and we would like to welcome you again this year”.
We invite everyone to join the President’s campaign “Christmas of Books”! Let us help our fellow countrymen to experience the joy of reading in Lithuanian!
From 1 to 11 December, we invite everyone to bring their used books to the faculty and leave them in one of the four boxes decorated with the campaign’s logo.
On 12 December, the representatives of the faculty will bring the books to the President’s Office and donate them to the representatives of the Lithuanian communities outside Lithuania.
