The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 has announced the results of the fields of study of Vilnius University (VU). VU is ranked in three out of five areas of science and studies. In Arts and Humanities, Vilnius University is ranked 375th this year. In the physical sciences, it ranks 501–550, and in the social sciences, 451–500, out of a total of 1,599 ranked higher education institutions worldwide.
“We are proud to contribute to strengthening the potential of higher education in the fields of linguistics (Public Discourse Linguistics; English and Another Foreign Language (Swedish), economics (Sustainable Financial Economics; Economics and Management), management (Art Management, International Business Management), and information systems (Financial Technologies; Marketing Technologies). The study programs of the Kaunas Faculty are interdisciplinary and innovative, so the graduates acquire up-to-date knowledge and learn to manage and apply them using proven, long-lasting principles. The University’s strategic aim to increase the internationalization of science is equally important for our Faculty, so this autumn will mark an expansion of the number of programs taught in English – the study program Marketing Technologies will be taught in English as well”, – states Prof. Dr Daiva Aliūkaitė, the Vice-Dean of Academic Affairs at the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University.
Linguistics continues to be the best-performing field in the Arts and Humanities. It is ranked in the top 250 universities in the world, securing the 201st–250th place for the second year in a row.
Three other VU fields of study are also ranked among the world’s top 450 higher education institutions. Physics and Astronomy in the physical sciences, Medicine in the life sciences, Economics and Econometrics in the social sciences and Management are ranked 401–450.
In the 2024 subject ranking, Social Science and Management are in the top 500 (451–500). It is followed by Business and Management Studies (ranked 501–550).
In Life Sciences and Medicine, Biological Sciences are ranked 501–550. Chemistry, ranked for the first time in 2022, maintains its position at 501–550 for the third year in a row.
In Engineering Science and Technology, Electrical and Electronic Engineering is ranked for the second consecutive year (501–530). Computer Science and Information Systems is ranked 651–700.
A total of 1,599 institutions from 149 countries worldwide were evaluated for the rankings, across 55 fields of study in 5 fields of science and study: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Natural Sciences and Medicine, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.
Universities are ranked according to the following criteria: academic staff evaluation, employer evaluation, number of citations in scientific publications, and the H index, which aims to measure the productivity of researchers and the impact of their work worldwide. Of the criteria, the most influential is the evaluation of academic staff.
