Data science laboratory
Data Science Laboratory is a scientific and applied research laboratory established in the Institute of Social Sciences and Applied Informatics of VU KNF in 2024.
The vision of the Data Science Laboratory is to become a center for scientific research, idea generation, discussion, and applied research in the field of Data Science, which has a significant impact on the digital transformation of business and societal processes worldwide.
The principle of the laboratory's activity is to cooperate with companies that aim to evaluate and develop their business processes more efficiently and have data for analyzing problems and finding their solutions.
The interdisciplinary team of researchers is assembled for each project for joining knowledge of experienced and young scientists, and encouraging students to participate in scientific activities.
We invite you to join the research team of the Data Science Laboratory!

Projects of Data science laboratory
EPSILON
The scientists-members of the laboratory will use their experience of interdisciplinary cooperation, performing activities of the international project EPSILON “Europeen Platform for Data science: Incubation, Learning, Operations and Network” EPSILON (ucy.ac.cy) (project duration 2022-2025 ).
This project is part of the global initiative Data Science for good (DS4G). The project solves the problem of how to help public and non-profit organizations not only to collect, but also to extract useful information from data, enabling to make decisions that benefit both companies and society. In such companies, the use of data is complicated not only due to the abundance of collected data, but also due to different sources of data, their collection formats, insufficient data "cleanliness" and also lack of data science specialists. The significant principle for implementation of this project will be the team work and involvement of experienced scientists from different fields of science and students, who are in a starting position of their scientific career, or are willing to benefit by gaining skills from practice and internship.
Project EPSILON coordinator - Harz University (Germany), partners - Nova SBE Institute of Science, Business and Economics (Portugal), University of Cyprus (Cyprus), Vilnius University (Lithuania): project manager on behalf of VU isProf. Dr. Dalia Krikščiūnienė.
In this project, VU is responsible for implementing one of the parts of the project PR3 "New Data for Good Initiative", which aims to bring together data analysis project teams from experts, most relevant to the area of the solved problem: data science, intelligent analysis, and machine learning, as well as social sciences (management, marketing, finance). The laboratory will initiate cooperation with public companies and non-profit organizations for joint analysis of their workflows, management, monitoring and generating insights of increasing their efficiency and new benefits based on application of data processing methods and the use of expert knowledge.
The experience gained during this data analysis project will be further used for experimental research projects of the Data science laboratory.
