History
The Department of Germanic Philology was established in the 1990s. Until then the department was known as The Department of Foreign Languages. It carried out the programme of the English Language and Literature atKaunas Faculty of Humanities; foreign languages such as English, German and French were taught to students of other specialities. In the 1990s The Department of Russian Language and Literature was reorganised into The Department of Foreign Languages and thus the teaching of foreign languages to the students of other programmes was entrusted to the newly established department. This division was the beginning of The Department of Germanic Philology which prepares specialists of philology.
The former heads of the Department of Germanic Philology were: Assoc. Prof. Juozas Vilutis Assoc. Prof. Vincas Pukelis, Assoc. Prof. Irena Jurkėnienė, Assoc. Prof. Audronė Krasnauskienė, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jūratė Patašiūtė, Prof. Dr. Jadvyga Krūminienė. Until 2010, the Head of the Department was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vytautė Pasvenskienė. Since September 2010, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Danguolė Satkauskaitė is the Head of the Department.
The premises of the department have changed several times. In the spring of 2013, the department moved to a loft located in the central building where the modern interior goes hand-in-hand with the old one and create a comfortable environment.
Due to financial support of the Kaunas Faculty of Humanities and the EU Structural Funds, the students of the newly established study programme Audiovisual Translation were equipped with the most modern language teaching and audiovisual translation laboratory, as well as a recording studio.
In 2014 the second audiovisual translation laboratory was prepared.
The first audiovisual translation specialists graduated from the university in the spring of 2016. The same year the Audiovisual Translation master study program was established.

RESEARCH AREAS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Germanic Philology conducts academic research according to Vilnius University long-term scientific research and experimental (social, cultural) development programme “Poetics, rhetoric, and linguistics: fundamental and applied artistic and non-artistic text research”.
Titles, duration and aims of the scientific research conducted by the department:
1. “The Applied Aspects of the Linguistic and Interdisciplinary Language Research Aspects” (01/01/2013 –31/12/2017):
- to investigate the methods, aspects and problems of audiovisual translation;
- to discuss the problems of translation and intercultural communication;
- to explore the English and German languages and compare them with the Lithuanian language from the semantic, pragmatic, cognitive and etymological point of view.
2. “The Correlation between Text and Context” (01/01/2013 –31/12/2017):
- to investigate poetics and rhetoric of the fictional texts and public discourse, taking into consideration social, cultural, genre and other aspects, as well as the correlation between text and context.
The academic research of the department scholars and PhD students is carried out from a number of perspectives – linguistics, literature, cultural and translation studies. The linguists set out the aim to investigate the English and German languages and compare them with the Lithuanian language from the semantic, pragmatic, cognitive and etymological point of view. Literature scholars investigate the poetics and rhetoric of fictional texts and public discourse, taking into account social, cultural, genre and other aspects, as well as the mutual correlation between text and context. Scholars of cultural studies research the relation between worldview and language in order to perceive the ancient Indo-European mythological image system in the ancient Germanic – Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic literature and to perform the reconstruction of myth and ritual.Translation research is first of all orientated towards audiovisual translation, its aspects, problems that arise and their solutions. Furthermore, translation and intercultural communication aspects are analysed.
