History

The Department was founded in 1990 when the associate professors of Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty of Humanities A. Vidžiunas, V. Sakalauskas, S. Girdzijauskas and E. Telešius instigated the process. The Department was headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eugenijus Telešius (from 1990 to 1993), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pranas Žvynys (from 1993 to 2003), Prof. Dr. (HP) Rimvydas Simutis (from 2003 to 2005), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Virgilijus Sakalauskas (from 2005 to 2010) and is currently headed by Prof. Dr. Audrius Lopata.

Currently, the Department consists of highly-qualified lecturers:

• 6 professors;
• 4 associate professors;
• 4 lectors, dr.;
• 2 assistants;
• 7 PhD students.

 

In 1990, the Department of Informatics developed a study programme that integrated Economics and Informatics entitled Computer-based Documentation Systems. During the last decade. The junction of the two sciences influenced the development of a new study programme entitled the Information Business which is regarded as one of the most promising specialities in the Labour Market. In 2001, with slight amendments to the study programme, the speciality was renamed Business Informatics. This bachelor degree study programme aims at providing general knowledge of Informatics and developing students’ ability to analyse enterprise data flows, apply advanced information systems in business processes and successfully implement modelling, design and installation of such systems.

Since 2009, the Faculty has been inviting applicants to study a new branch Business Informatics bachelor degree study programme – Finance Informatics. This programme is developed to deepen the knowledge concerning finance that an Informatics specialist has so that it could be applied while working in information technology companies which provide solutions to financial market and tax institutions.

The Department of Informatics offers two master level study programmes, i.e. Business Informatics (informatics-oriented) and Business Information Systems (management-oriented). The main aim of these two programmes is to prepare highly-qualified Informatics specialists who not only have the basics of economics, but are also able to evaluate information systems in a company or organisation and introduce new tools, methods and means to renovate them.

The Department is proud of its graduates’ achievements. Liutauras Bauža works as the first secretary at the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Moldova. Marius Važgauskas is the director of sales and development at Ltd. Blue Solutions. Darijus Strašunskas works at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. Mindaugas Pukas is the sales manager of the Ltd. Galinta and Partners. Jovita Nenortaitė is the projects manager at CSC Baltic.

SCIENTISTS

The Department is composed of 6 professors, 7 associate professors and doctors, 2 lecturers and 2 assistants. 10 dissertations have been defended, and 8 PhD students are preparing their PhD theses. In 2007 – 2008, three doctors of the Department carried out the habilitation procedure. The most outstanding scientists of the Department are: prof. Dr. (HP) Saulius Gudas, Prof. Dr. (HP) Virgilijus Sakalauskas, Prof. Dr. Audrius Lopata, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dalia Krikščiūnienė, Prof. Dr. Gintautas Garšva, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vytautas Rudžionis, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saulius Masteika.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

In carrying out their scientific research, lecturers analyse the development and investigation of algorithms of artificial intelligence systems, application of intellectual methods in the modelling of financial markets and systems. Applied research of financial risk assessment, e-commerce, e-business, e-government and e-learning is carried out, the development and organisation of structural models of operating rules in organisations are analysed. Research of spoken Lithuanian phonemes is carried out as well as better recognition of Lithuanian, English and Russian phonemes by means of filter properties.

CONFERENCES

Since 1998, the Department of Informatics of Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty of Humanities organises the annual international conference entitled Information Technologies for Business and Education. In 2007, it was developed into an international conference FIHUSO (1st International and Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference on Merging Physical Science, the Humanities and Social Science) of the Faculty. The conference entitled Information Technologies and the Integration of Science for master level and PhD students has been organised with the help of Kaunas University of Technology and Vytautas Magnus University. Both lecturers and students take part in the conference. The department has organised a number of scientific seminars in various prestigious international conferences (Reading (England) in 2005, Vilnius (Lithuania) in 2006, 2012 Kaunas (Lithuania) in 2008, and Poznan (Poland) in 2009, 2011, 2013, Berlin (Germany) in 2010, Larnaca (Cyprus) in 2014). The personnel of the Department organises seminars to examine the diverse issues dealing with Informatics, e-government and e-business.
