History
The Department of the Philology was established in 1966 being one of the first two departments of Vilnius University Kaunas Evening Faculty. The community of the Department is proud that the spread of the Lithuanian language thought is a sign of the beginning of VU academic and scientific traditions in Kaunas. The first head of the Department was the Lithuanian philologist Vladas Žulys. In 1968, a part of the Department of Philology was named the Department of Lithuanian Language and Literature. The head of this Department was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vitas Labutis who was later replaced by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adomas Šoblinskas, then by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Juozas Jasaitis. SOCIO-CULTURAL ACTIVITY
A small society for creators and those interested in creating has grown into an alternative literary movement (AKLAS) Žirklionis where students who do not lack creative intentions have opportunities to develop their artistic talents, i.e. to discuss their creative results with peers. Žirklionis is led by the lecturer in the Department of Lithuanian Philology Dr. Mindaugas Grigaitis.
Lithuanian linguistic expeditions have grown into Kaunas Faculty of Humanities’ folk ensemble Uosinta. In the seventies and the eighties, Lithuanian literary activities were widespread: literary creation almanacs Žarija, Mirgėjimai were known both within the Faculty and outside it. The lovely premises that have witnessed historical and cultural traditions have become the Department’s roof where we organise meetings with famous writers, linguists, literary scientists and artists. The “Snake Hall” (as the hall has become known as) is where new books are introduced as well as new issues of journals dealing with literary and cultural matters.
Since 2010, the portal www.kaunozinios.lt has been a partner of the Department. 3rd year students of Lithuanian Philology and Advertising, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Skirmantė Biržietienė, prepare publications for this portal.

Feeling that a young person often has a difficulty in climbing over his/her own ego and overcome personal ambitions, fears and join creative communities, Žirklionis made a decision to organise a seminar in 2010 designated as one of the opportunities to turn literature into a means to unite youth, encourage them to deliver public speeches and evoke discussions about the process of modern literature. The seminar evoked discussions on the part of young literary experts from Lithuanian universities and schools.
Students’ scientific conferences
Since 2005, annual scientific conferences for young literary scientists are organised where students present their research on Lithuanian literature, linguistics, advertising and public discourse. The main participants of the conference are the bachelor and master level students of Lithuanian Philology and Advertising, Lithuanian Linguistics and Lithuanian Literature. The conference helps the participants to share their scientific research experience, evaluate their results within the general context; such conferences give birth to new scientific insights, create conceptions for further research. The best reports are chosen during the conference while their authors get an opportunity to participate in the national Lithuanian students’ conference.
