Aim
The aim of this Master study programme “Public Discourse Linguistics” is to prepare high-profile specialists of linguistics who meet the needs of the contemporary society and have knowledge of theoretical and practical issues of contemporary linguistics, are able to competently evaluate speech planning processes and its realizations in public discourse, who regard language as a tool to make an impact and to reach a certain goal and can professionally create as well as evaluate effective public discourse.
Learning outcomes
A graduate of this study programme will be able to explain systemic relations of Lithuanian language units, identify language variation and norming, evaluate facts and phenomena of the Lithuanian language within the scope of actual usage and codification; to explain, investigate relations between linguistic and non-linguistic variables; will be able to apply the principles of public discourse research and creation strategies; evaluate and solve language problems and develop linguistic discourse; will be able to pursue scientific research work.
Distinctive features of the study programme
This study programme is different in its orientation towards public discourse, knowledge and application of speech planning strategies, competent linguistic evaluation and research of public discourse as well as professional composition of effective texts.
Courses taught
The aim of the study programme, skills and competences developed reflect the relations between two scientific fields, i.e. linguistics and communication:
- Theoretical and practical issues of linguistics are discussed (Branches and Methods of Linguistics, Terminology and Speech Planning, Norming Linguistics and Practice of Corpus Planning, Functional Discourse Grammar, Practical Onomastics, Lexicography and Meta-lexicography);
- Cultural and communicational aspects which predetermine language usage (Multimodality in Public Discourse, Semiotics of Public Discourse , Rhetoric of Public Discourse, Communication Management, Public and Mass Communication),
- Functioning of language, social context (Sociolinguistics, Linguistic Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis),
- Skills of practical applied and critical writing are developed (Linguistic Strategies of Effective Discourse, Practice of Applied Writing, Methodology of Linguistic Research, Final Master Thesis).
Career
Graduates of the study programme can work as language planning specialists in Lithuanian or EU science, state or commercial companies, linguists-experts in legal institutions, linguists-consultants in various agencies; newspaper, magazines, e-publishing editors; stylists or editors in state or cultural institutions, publishing houses, editorial offices, creators and analysts of public discourse in communication, public relations or advertising agencies, advertising or public relations specialists in state and commercial institutions; may work as pedagogues as well as researchers in institutions of higher education.
