VU KNF Students Consolidated Last Year's Position in the Lithuanian Rifle Union Hackathon

CTF VU KNF 2024On 4-6 October, Kaunas hosted the second cyber defence and security innovation hackathon "Fire Shield 2024", initiated by the Lithuanian Rifle Union (LRU). The hackathon was organised by Kaunas Science and Technology Park "Tech-Park Kaunas" and three investment funds. This initiative is under the patronage of the Ministry of Economy and Innovation. Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty (VU KNF) student team "Baubai" (Eng. “Bogy Men”) took second place in the cyber competition "Capture the Flag" (CTF) and confidently defended the position they won last year.

Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty (VU KNF) student team "Baubai" (Eng. “Bogy Men”; the team’s name last year was "Agresyvūs pacifistai", Eng. "Aggressive Pacifists") was brought together again by the second-year student Raimundas Mačiulis and his coursemates Matas Žukauskas, Adris Čypas and Paulius Turauskas. The team members were also the third-year student Rimvydas Čivilis and the fourth-year student Karolis Petniūnas. All of them are students of the VU KNF Bachelor's degree programme Information Systems and Cyber Security.

Celebrate International Translators’ Day with VU KNF!

vertimo konkursas 2024 webEvery year on 30 September, VU Kaunas Faculty celebrates the International Translators’ Day with various creative initiatives. This year, students, lecturers, administrative staff and other members of the community are invited to visualise the professional activity of a translator using creative video, audio and language tools.

“We invite students to unleash their creativity and participate in our exciting contest. Show us what translation means to you by creating an original piece of art that represents the role of a translator!” says Assoc. Prof Jurgita Astrauskienė, the lecturer at the Institute of Language, Literature and Translation Studies.

“We encourage participants to explore audio, visual, or a combination of both mediums to express their understanding of translation,” explains Assoc. Prof Jurgita Kerevičienė, the lecturer at the Institute of Language, Literature and Translation Studies.

Admissions for International Students Have Begun at Vilnius University

tinklapiui 4Vilnius University (VU) has opened admissions for international students for the 2025 academic year, inviting students from all over the world to join one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious universities. VU offers a wide range of study programmes: more than 60 Bachelor's and Master's programmes, as well as two prestigious joint "Arqus" master's programmes, which allow students to receive education in multiple European countries.

VU’s international community is growing rapidly—this year, over 800 new international students have joined the university. Among the most popular study programmes are International Business, Medicine, Information Systems and Cybersecurity, and Software Engineering. Next year, students will also be able to choose from new and highly relevant programmes such as Nursing, Sustainability and Future Societies.

VU Tech Hub Invites Students to Join a New Startup Program

VU Tech Hub 2024Are you a Vilnius University student eager to harness your knowledge in a real business? If you dream of exploring entrepreneurship, the VU Tech Hub invites you to register for a 6-month pre-accelerator program. During this time, Vilnius University (VU) students will be guided through the startup creation process by experienced lecturers and mentors. The program offers 45 of the most motivated students the chance to not only develop essential entrepreneurial skills but also to find team members, join the startup ecosystem, and connect with investors.

"We see a strong appetite among students to learn more about setting up a business and to get help with their business ideas, so we want to help them do just that. Students will develop real businesses and solve real problems, but most importantly, they will have the opportunity to discover other motivated students who bring different competences and can become their business partners," says Gediminas Rumšas, Vice Dean of the VU Faculty of Economics and Administration.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Kęstutis Driaunys: Cybersecurity Is a Continuous Process With No One-Click Solution

fakultetas dekanas driaunys2Cyberattacks are constantly evolving in their form and content ‒ from the first pop-up ads on your computer screen promising a chance to win a new mobile phone at the click of a button or emails about a long-lost relative’s inheritance to a more sophisticated scheme with messages containing active links from your bank requesting a password change. Moreover, you may soon expect scammers to replicate a familiar person’s voice for fake calls to attempt to steal your money.

So, how should we recognise cyberattacks and avoid them? What is their impact on organisations? What are the remaining gaps in our cybersecurity approach? Assoc. Prof. Dr Kęstutis Driaunys, a researcher from the Institute of Social Sciences and Applied Informatics at Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University, has the answers to these and many more questions.

DON’T STAY ON THE RIVERBANK! Canoe trip for the VU Kaunas Faculty community

tinklapiui 3We invite you to take part in a 4-hour canoeing trip on the Žeimena River in Aukštaitija National Park and have fun together at Sarių karčema – country style restaurant dinner. 

The bus will be chartered for the trip and is scheduled to return to Kaunas by 10:30 PM on Saturday evening. You can also use your own transport to travel, but consult concerning the logistics of the car. 

The following items are recommended for canoeing: swimwear, comfortable clothes and footwear that are likely to get wet while paddling, a raincoat, a hat and sunscreen, insect repellent, drinking water and snacks, a sturdy polythene bag to store your gear in the kayak so it doesn’t get soaked. It is also recommended to have another set of clothes to change into and spend the evening outside in the campsite.

7.30 AM we gather in the courtyard of Kaunas Faculty, pack, count and go to the bus, which will be waiting for us in front of the Church of Vytautas Magnus in Karaliaus Mindaugas Avenue.  

8.00 AM we will leave by bus for Seniškės recreation site by the Žeimena River, Švenčionys district. 

11.00 AM–12.00 PM. In pairs, we will set off by canoes on the Žeimena River towards Švenčionėliai. 

4.00–5.00 PM We will arrive at the Platumai beach site (finish coordinates 55.169948, 25.984796 Žeimenos g. 49, Švenčionių r.) 

5:00 PM we go by bus to the Sariai Inn for dinner. Dinner menu: kugelis (potato pie), steaming soup, tea, coffee and apple pie baked by the local hare. 

8:00 PM Departure by bus to Kaunas. Planned return by 10:30 PM. 

The Faculty and the Erasmus Project Fund will cover the cost of the canoe rental, dinner and bus rental. 

Participants shall take care of personal drinks and snacks during the trip and the canoeing trip.
