Vilnius University Student Representation in Kaunas Faculty

Vilnius University Student Representation in Kaunas Faculty (original - VU SA KnF, en. VU SR KnF) is one of the oldest self-governing student bodies in Kaunas, founded in 1991. Since the first year of its existence, SR has been closely cooperating with the VU Kaunas faculty administration and other student self-governments in Lithuania, representing students in the Faculty, University level and national organizations, taking care of student integration into the University, ensuring the quality of studies, academic and social involvement of students in the study process and the academic community.

The Student’s Representation at Vilnius University in Kaunas was founded by Tomas Palšis, currently the general director of the well-known company UAB ACME Group. The history of the Representation, which existed under a different name at that time, began with a group of students activists. It is said that in that year it was proposed to close the Faculty of Kaunas, but student representatives united, actively opposed this idea and showed that they can be (and are!) a strong force. The Faculty’s administration was convinced by the determination of the students, so it was decided to give the Organization more freedom to operate.

Over the years, the name of the Organization has changed several times: at first it was the Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty of Humanities Student’s Representation (VU KHF SA), later, after the name of the Faculty changed, it became the Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty Student’s Representation (VU KnF SA), and since 2017, after joining the Vilnius University Student’s Representation and becoming a joint organization - Vilnius University Student’s Representation in Kaunas Faculty (VU SA KnF). During the entire existence of the organization, 20 Chairmen and Chairwomen have changed: Regimantas Buožius, Ramūnas Pilvelis, Laurynas Mitkus, Egidijus Merkevičius, Renata Pauliukaitytė, Mindaugas Jasiulis, Jurgita Skirmantaitė, Rasa Vileikytė, Edvinas Jančiauskas, Birutė Zumaraitė, Tadas Žirgulis, Algirdas Kviklys, Julius Spudvilas, Gintarė Lazdinytė. , Lukas Jakštas, Domas Varanauskas, Justas Paulikas, Indrė Zabulytė, Ernestas Basovas, Neda Žutautaitė. Currently, Lijana Savickienė has been elected as the Chairwoman of the Student Representation for the second term.

VU SR KnF is filled with new members every year. Student’s Representation is not only an opportunity for first-year students to get to know the social and academic affairs of the University, the Faculty and the SR from a closer look, but at the same time to share the goal of creating a united student body capable of effectively representing the students of Vilnius University and, fostering the university culture, creating the most favorable conditions for student self-expression. VU SR KnF activities are divided into areas where members can work for the desired period of time during their study year on the principle of volunteering. Currently, in the Organization, it is possible to become members of the sociol-academic affairs, communication, marketing, organizational affairs and/or student representatives in the management structures of the Kaunas Faculty. At VU SR KnF, every student can find an activity in which he/she will realize himself/herself best!

The Student’s Representation actively organizes events not only for the Faculty’s community, but also organizes the "River of Souls" that has become annual event in Kaunas, which attracts city residents and guests. During the 29 years of its existence, VU SR KnF has changed a lot - the name, Chairwomen and Chairmen, management principles, representatives, members, but the main goal and idea remains the same - to effectively and qualitatively represent the interests of students.

United for the Future of Students!

On April 1, 2010, Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty claimed the project according to BPD Human Resource Development Action Programmes Priority 2 Lifelong Learning VP1-2.2-ŠMM-07-K draft Improvement of Study Quality, Development of Internationality. On the basis of this project funded by the EU Structural Funds, the Faculty installed one of the most modern audiovisual laboratories in Lithuania. Moreover, the Faculty purchased and installed the most modern equipment Sanako Study 1200 for language teaching, translation and interpreting and the hardware necessary for its operation (headphones, microphones); the equipment was adapted to 21 workstations (20 workstations for students and 1 for the lecturer). This equipment enables the improvement of students’ linguistic abilities  on all levels as well as skills in the audiovisual translation . Also, Sanako Study 1200 laboratory enables students to study individually, which is extremely relevant for improving skills in translation while aiming at individual improvement and professional level.

The 86 square meter premises that belong to the audiovisual laboratory consist of a computer-aided video conference classroom (20+1 workstations) and a technical room. The classroom is made sure to have the most up-to-date computer, audio and video equipment, i.e. professional remote control HD video cameras; colour television standard back displays for preparation of professional reports; microphones to record the voice of the presenter/lecturer and auditorium microphones to record questions from the audience; soundproof screens and dynamic lighting enables to create the highest quality lectures/reports; HD video conference device enables high quality video broadcasts within video conference networks; the video broadcast server provides an opportunity to carry out video broadcasts via the Internet. The classroom also contains equipment for simultaneous translation which enables users to perform a direct translation of a lecture/report. There is a room adjacent to the main classroom for the video conference technician so that recordings and recorded material could be processed.
