Aim

The aim of this Master study programme “Public Discourse Linguistics” is to prepare high-profile specialists of linguistics who meet the needs of the contemporary society and have knowledge of theoretical and practical issues of contemporary linguistics, are able to competently evaluate speech planning processes and its realizations in public discourse, who regard language as a tool  to make an impact and to reach a certain goal and can professionally create as well as evaluate effective public discourse.

Learning outcomes

A graduate of this study programme will be able to explain systemic relations of Lithuanian language units, identify language variation and norming, evaluate facts and phenomena of the Lithuanian language within the scope of actual usage and codification; to explain, investigate relations between linguistic and non-linguistic variables; will be able to apply the principles of public discourse research and creation strategies; evaluate and solve language problems and develop linguistic discourse; will be able to pursue scientific research work.

Distinctive features of the study programme

This study programme is different in its orientation towards public discourse, knowledge and application of speech planning strategies, competent linguistic evaluation and research of public discourse as well as professional composition of effective texts.

Courses taught

The aim of the study programme, skills and competences developed reflect the relations between two scientific fields, i.e. linguistics and communication:

1. Theoretical and practical issues of linguistics are discussed (Branches and Methods of Linguistics, Terminology and Speech Planning, Norming Linguistics and Practice of Corpus Planning, Functional Discourse Grammar, Practical Onomastics, Lexicography and Meta-lexicography);
2. Cultural and communicational aspects which predetermine language usage (Multimodality in Public Discourse, Semiotics of Public Discourse , Rhetoric of Public Discourse, Communication Management, Public and Mass Communication),
3. Functioning of language, social context (Sociolinguistics, Linguistic Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis),
4. Skills of practical applied and critical writing are developed (Linguistic Strategies of Effective Discourse, Practice of Applied Writing, Methodology of Linguistic Research, Final Master Thesis).

The aim of the programme

To prepare highly qualified professionals who have knowledge in translation studies and specialised translation theories and methodologies, are capable of applying contemporary translation theories and methods, discerning, evaluating and solving the theoretical and practical problems of translation and localisation of audiovisual production in the rapidly developing industries of translation technologies and specialised translation.

Learning outcomes          

Having completed the study programme, the graduate will possess profound knowledge in the field of translation studies and will be able to:

• analyse and evaluate subtitled, surtitled, voiced-over and dubbed works, adapt audio-visual text to people with hearing and visual impairments;
• solve linguistic, cultural, software as well as other localization problems;
• effectively use electronic translation tools and technologies;
•  translate audio-visual products from a second foreign language;
• critically analyse and edit translated texts, create multimodal texts and present them in a foreign language,  to work in a team;
• individually organize complex activities of audiovisual translation, carry out scientific research

Distinctive features of the study programme 

The study programme aims at interconnecting scientific research and the practical implementation of research results; therefore, the Department cooperates with its social partners working in the field of AVT. Although internship is not provided in the programme, 20 credits are allocated to the Audiovisual Project in semesters 2 and 3, which is performed by the students in collaboration with social partners. The final assessment of this module is the project defence. The defence will take place in front of the Board consisting of prominent researchers and social partners.

Aim

MA study programme “Lithuanian Literature” aims at preparing highly qualified specialists of literature who would have knowledge of the development of Lithuanian literature, could apply various methodologies of humanities when analysing literary works, freely dispose the data and theory of the World literature, intellectual cultural paradigms of artistic experiences, have knowledge of dissemination of literature, be able to create academic, critical, publicist and other texts, be ready to pursue individual research work.

Learning outcomes:

A graduate is able to investigate the genetics, history structure, functions, literary phenomena of literary texts produced in different epochs within cultural as well as social context; can formulate and solve the problems of literary science, apply knowledge by conceptualizing models of literary science, knows the history of Lithuanian literature, contemporary research problematic, apply research theories and methodologies; knows dissemination process of literary works and business of literary texts, reader anthropology, principles of text, audience interoperability, reception, tendency in literary texts; may carry out research, create texts, projects of public communication; plan and organize individual learning and work with regard to ever-changing environment; realize the importance of lifelong learning and creativity development; able to work in team and mobilise co-workers; plan complex team work, adjust it to current situation; think systematically, analytically, critically; produce creative ideas, work innovatively, suggest original problem solutions.

Distinctive features of the study programme

The programme develops high-profile literary scholars who have knowledge of the specifics of Lithuanian literature, able to apply different methodologies of humanities and create academic, critical, publicist and other texts. Subject-specific structure of the programme is logical and consistent, corresponding to the tendencies in contemporary Lithuanian literary studies, i.e. to preserve the starting from micro-details of text organization into meaningful whole, ending with the level of global literary meta-dialogue.
