Information about the event

Place: Vilnius University, Kaunas Faculty, Muitines 8, Kaunas, LITHUANIA

Date/Time: Monday, September 30 to Tuesday, October 1.

Hackathon “Big data analysis and visualization” is a series of two 2-day events intended primarily for students of the partnering universities: Vilnius University, Reutlingen University, University of Latvia, Tartu University. Students of Vytautas Magnus University have a special invitation to participate. Participation is open to students and academic staff of other higher education institutions.

This project is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic Germany through project competition of the Baltic-German University Liaison Office (HochSchulKontor.lv).

The first of the two hackathons will take place at the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University on September 30 – October 1, 2019. The second hackathon is organized at Reutlingen University (Germany) on November 7-8, 2019.

The hackathon challenge

The grand challenge of the Hackathon is to develop use cases for very-high-resolution display wall. One of the challenges related to big data analysis and visualization is the need to visualize data in meaningful and readable way. To date, most workstations use 1 or two displays with the total resolution of 4K or 8K. High-resolution displays which are available on the market are bulky and pricy and for those reasons have not achieved wide industrial adoption. Another  substantial barrier to wide adoption of high resolution displays – is the lack of use cases/concepts of how to take advantage of the very high resolution – the challenge we are going to address in this hackathon!

Participants of the Kaunas hackathon will have access to high-resolution display architecture with a resolution of 16,5K (7680 x 2160 pixels). This prototype technology allows scalability (the system was tested with a resolution of 52K), is easy to implement, and has a great potential for big data visualization applications due to low cost, simple setup, and the already mentioned scalability. The prototype technology has been developed by Prof. Arnicans and his colleagues at University of Latvia (the description of the prototype is available for download here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/322133032).

Students are invited to invent use cases for high resolution visualization. Ideas can be sought in the university and company presentations at the hackathon or elsewhere.

Organization of the hackathon

The two day Kaunas hackathon will start at Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University (Muitines 8, Kaunas) at 10:00 on Monday, September 30 and end in the evening of Tuesday, October 1st, 2019.

University partners and participating companies will lead in with presentations on big data analysis and visualization cases, challenges and solutions, directions for future development, employment trends.

At about 14:00 (the start time may be changed depending on the number of registered participants and companies) the hackathon’s 24 hour countdown will start. At the afternoon of the following day student (and faculty, if any) teams will be making presentations on their developed ideas.

A jury made of university and company representatives will evaluate the presentations and announce the winning team.

The grand prize for the challenge

The winning team is receiving the grand prize – the travel and accommodation expenses of the winning team to attend Reutlingen hackathon on November 7-8 will be paid by the project.

Important information about the teams

  • Participation in the hackathon is only possible for teams
  • The teams can be of minimum 4 and maximum 5 people
  • Teams can be formed prior to the start of the event or during the event, but not later than 16:00 (unless later on announced differently) of September 30 (the 1st day of the event)
  • While students are the primary target group of the hackathon, we invite teams made up of lecturers and /or company representatives. The Grand Prize of the hackathon will go to a student team only (The Grand Prize of the hackathon will go to a student team only (other than student group team won’t receive the Grand Prize).
